Hemp 400 Coffee

The Hemp 400 Coffee is a special version of the Hemp 400. This model features discarded coffee bags from Dutch coffee roaster Peeze. Every sack is unique, and so is every chair. You can choose to apply the coffee sack on the outside only or on both the inside and outside of the chair.

The hemp parts of the back and seat are 100% plant-based, 100% recyclable and made from 100% residual materials.

The collaboration between Vepa and Peeze perfectly aligns with their shared ambition to contribute to a waste-free world.

Peeze, an Arnhem-based coffee roaster known for its fair-trade and high-quality coffee, receives its coffee beans in sturdy jute sacks from sustainable plantations and cooperatives all around the world. Given the large number of beans roasted each year, a considerable amount of jute builds up and this organic residual flow now serves as a valuable secondary raw material for the production of new furniture by Vepa.

Erik Luisman, Sustainability & Business Development at Vepa: ‘Vepa’s original Hemp chair has been in production with great success for several years now. Thanks to the unique combination of hemp mats and Plantics’ organic resin, this design offers numerous possibilities. Replacing the hemp outer layer with a jute coffee sack, complete with original print, gives the chair an even more distinctive character. In this process, the fully organic and circular aspect is maintained!

Rik van Paassen, sustainability manager at coffee roaster Peeze, said: ‘At Peeze, we believe in the power of recycling and we are actively committed to, for example, reusable packaging and the refurbishment of coffee machines. Amazing to see that now, in the collaboration with Vepa, we have also found a circular re-use for our jute sacks.

The Hemp Coffee collection is a tangible example of how circular thinking and collaboration can lead to concrete solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future. What started as a residual stream of discarded coffee bags has been transformed into sustainable, stylish furniture with a special story.

What makes these chairs extra special is that they are pressed by Vepa itself at its production site in Emmen. This ties in with the social values to which Vepa attaches great importance: production in our own factories, job creation and guaranteeing consistent quality.

Hemp 400 Coffee belongs to the Hemp Coffee collection along with Hemp Fine Coffee, Hemp High Coffee, Hemp Medium Coffee and Hemp 400 High Coffee.

Hemp 400 Coffee – product sheet

Hemp 400 High Coffee – product sheet

Hemp 400 Coffee is locally designed, developed and produced.

Local production: Vepa distinguishes itself by producing everything in its own local facilities. Our own wood, sheet steel, tubular steel, powder coating, wood spray, upholstery and final assembly departments form a complete production circle within a single company. By producing close to the sales market we keep distances small and CO2 emissions minimal.

LCA: By using independent LCAs (life cycle analysis) we reveal the environmental impact of a product. In product development we can greatly improve later designs by carrying out an LCA in the initial phase. In addition, an LCA also provides insight into the main factors responsible for the environmental damage. We then use these factors as starting points for redesign or as focal points for improvement. The LCAs are carried out in accordance with ISO 14044.

FSC® and PEFC: Vepa only uses certified wood. The FSC® and PEFC labels stand for responsible and sustainable forest management. Responsible forest management meets three criteria: it takes account of the environment, respects social aspects (such as the rights of local communities and forest workers) and is economically viable. Moreover, wood is the number one bio-based resource by nature.

TPAC (Timber Procurement Assessment Committee): Timber to be supplied or timber processed in products to be supplied must comply with the Dutch Procurement Criteria for Timber according to the Socially Responsible Procurement criteria. FSC® and PEFC are both systems that have been approved by the Dutch state secretary.

SRP criteria: Vepa complies with the SRP criteria drawn up by the central government. The national criteria for socially responsible procurement (SRP) for office furniture are available via the SRP criteria tool (https://www.mvicriteria.nl/en/webtool).
