Plantics

Together with Plantics we made the most sustainable chair ever.

Together with Plantics, we launched a unique, sustainable chair with a shell made from hemp and biological resin. The shell is 100% organic, plant-based and recyclable. Something that was never done before.

The collection, called Hemp, is produced in the Netherlands and consists of chairs and bar stools with various bases. The chairs are designed in such way that parts are easy to separate and materials can be reused endlessly.

Sticky mess

University of Amsterdam-researchers Prof. Dr. Gadi Rothenberg and Dr. Albert Alberts accidentally developed a sticky mess that turned out to be a unique resin. Together with hemp fibers, this resin formed the basis for a new material that we start working with.

For years we had been looking for a biomaterial in which all material is biological, plant-based and recyclable. Only then could we really develop a sustainable product.

A shell of hemp and bio-resin

The fibres from the hemp plant serve as raw material to make the shell of the chair. The advantage of hemp is that it grows without artificial fertilizers or pesticides, hardly needs water and is cultivated in our region (Northern Netherlands and Germany). In addition, hemp is strong and it absorbs CO2. The resin is used as binder.

Renewable Materials Awards 2021

Vepa and Plantics won the prestigious Innovation Award. Hemp was awarded Renewable Material of the Year 2021 at the international Renewable Materials Conference.
